Emily Kalina

Emily Kalina grew up in Vermont and New Hampshire where she gained appreciation for color in the natural world. She started painting with watercolors in high school and went on to study illustration at the Rhode Island School of Design. After living and showing her work in Northern Vermont and Western Massachusetts she moved back to Providence, RI to rejoin the community of artists she had previously worked with. She paints in her studio primarily with watercolors but also uses oils and gouache to create abstract work, landscapes, still lives, portraits, and commissioned work.
Kalina’s work is currently represented by W Gallery and Studios in Sacramento, CA and can be seen at Studio Hop in Providence, RI.
Her work has been shown in several local Providence galleries such as Gallery Z and Picture This Frame Shop. In addition to painting she also teaches aspiring artists of all ages.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT
In my paintings I concentrate on color and light as expressions, more stylized than representational. These paintings are an indulgence in color, water and detail where the careful layering of the paint enables me to achieve a luminosity and depth that is unusual for watercolors. Although there are recognizable objects in these compositions, pieces of flowers, people and other representational items, they are elements that are abstracted. They become a starting point for my explorations with composition, color, and texture as I bring these raw elements to the foreground.
I use an emotive and magnified perspective, which allows me to communicate with my viewers the moment that I am creating. In my previous series, “The Body As Landscape”, a collection of magnified views of friends, including several self-portraits, I pursued a conceptual treatment on the conventions of aesthetic beauty. “Organics in Abstract” is a departure from the literal and visceral, it is a pursuit of beauty for the sake of itself, using vibrant colors and brilliant tones.
“Organics in Abstract” is a development from what I loved most about “The Body As Landscape” incorporating the magnified perspective, and expressionistic modeling with light. These close-perspective paintings illustrate the magnificence of the small details that form the basis of life.
